The Point Mugu Cowl is named for one of my favorite spots to watch the sunrise and sunset. One of the benefits of being on a stretch of south-facing coastline is that you can see both over the ocean. Point Mugu also hosts a tidal estuary where several threatened and endangered bird species nest.

This cowl is knit in the round using two colors of fingering weight yarn. If you’ve ever wanted to try colorwork but it seemed intimidating, or you’re a more advanced knitter looking for an easy colorwork project for a bit of relaxation, this is a great project for you. The cowl is worked with just two strands of yarn, but the variegated colors make it look much more complicated than it is.

Note: the sizing of this cowl can easily be adjusted by adding or subtracting stitches in increments of ten

200 yds (183 m) of Color A
240 yds (220 m) of Color B
 
Suggested yarn: Storied Fiber Art Sock Twist, 400 yards (366 meters) per hank. I used the colorway BVS - Branderschrofen Variegated and a bare skein for this cowl.

4” (10 cm) square = 32 stitches x 38 rows in stockinette
