The hat is knitted as a tube. Started with a provisional cast on, from the ponytail opening. When the tube is complete, push the provisional cast on end through the tube. By transferring half of the stitches from the left needle to the right needle, the opening will form a twist when joining the two sets of live stitches together.

The finished garment is very flexible. And since the closing end is at the top of the hat, you can use either seamless Kitchener stitches or 3-needles bind-off, the closing edge can be hidden by the twist.
