Every November, on the eleventh day at the eleventh hour, people throughout the world gather at memorials and cenotaphs to honour the fallen. This shawl design is my small way of thanking those who have given the greatest sacrifice, and as such, all proceeds from the sale of this shawl pattern will go to the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Fund. Funds from the Poppy Trust go towards supporting Canadian veterans and their families.

Poppy is a top-down, crescent shaped shawl that can be worked with beads or nupps or neither, depending on one’s preference. The shawl uses a traditional Estonian lace pattern known as “Silvia kiri”, which I’ve renamed “Poppy Lace” for the purposes of this shawl.
The sample shawl was worked with Crooked Kitchen Yarn’s Bluebella 80/20 fingering weight yarn in the “THE Poppy” colourway. It is a size small. I’d like to say a huge thank-you to Laura of Crooked Kitchen, who came up with this custom colourway specifically for this project, and generously provided yarn support for this pattern. Poppy Lace: 18 sts and 28 rows = 4 x 4” (10 x 10 cm) on 3.75 mm (US 5) knitting needles, aggressively blocked.

Small: 450-475 yards/411-434 metres of fingering weight yarn
Medium: 625-650 yards/572-594 metres of fingering weight yarn
Large: 750-800 yards/686-732 metres of fingering weight yarn

Needles
3.75 mm (US 5) knitting needles, straight (at least 14”/36 cm long) or circular
4 mm (US 6) knitting needles, straight (at least 14”/36 cm long) or circular

Notions

• pins, wires, and a mat for blocking
• tapestry needle for weaving in the ends
• optional: 2 st markers for marking edge/increase sts
