The Power of Three shawl collection is made up of simple, single-skein shawls. The three triangular shawls are perfect for beginners, or showing off special yarn (the original samples are made with handspun yarn). All three shawls are included in the pattern.

Prue and Piper are classic top down triangle shawls, worked outward from the centre top with complementary garter stitch details and similar shapes. Phoebe, meanwhile, is worked sideways from the narrow to broad end for a slightly different look.

All three of the patterns use the same basic stitches in different combinations, creating relaxing knits that let your yarn sing. And if you’re a newer knitter, they’re perfect for practising your skills.

And at the end, you’ll have a beautiful, wearable accessory that tucks nicely under your coat.

Suggested yarn:
Each shawl uses one 100g skein of DK weight yarn. Look for something with a meterage of around 210m/230yds per 100g.

I’ve provided some yarn suggestions, which are just some of my personal favourites:

  • Sandnes Garn Peer Gynt
  • World of Wool Marble
  • John Arbon Knit By Numbers DK

You can choose to knit these shawls with other yarn weights – in particular 4ply – but may want to make them larger to make the most of your yarn. The pattern includes tips for which sections to repeat for larger sizes/different yarns.

Needles and notions:
• 4mm long circular needles (although the shawls are worked flat, circular needles can accommodate the number of stitches more easily)
• 4 stitch markers
• darning needle

Gauge:
All these shawls are worked at a gauge of around 19sts to 10cm/4in. Gauge isn’t critical, but if yours varies wildly from the pattern gauge then you’ll find you use more or less yarn than stated here.

Skills needed:
These shawls are designed to use basic knitting skills, making them a great first knit project. You’ll need to be able to do the following:
• Knit and purl
• Garter tab cast on (video instructions are included in the pattern)
• Yarn over increases
• Casting off
• Blocking (instructions are included in the pattern)
• Darning in ends
