This March I stumbled onto some Korean TV on Netflix and it has sparked an obsession not seen since I discovered Battlestar Galactica. This hat is inspired by a hat worn in one of my favorite KDramas.

This hat is a quick and easy knit. There are two tricky aspects of the hats construction. The cabling is worked to the inside of the hat so it is seen when the brim is folded out. This requires the cable stitches to be purled rather than knit. The other tricky part is making the giant pom pom. Neither of these are terribly difficult.

The hat comes in 3 sizes: small (20”), medium (22”) and large (24”). The measurements were taken by gently stretching the ribbing flat. The resting measurements of the hat should be much smaller because ribbing should collapse in on itself. The hat is very stretchy. My head measures 24” around and the large is the most comfortable for me.

The hat requires at least 400 yards of wool or acrylic yarn in worsted (size small) or aran (sizes medium and large) weights. Alpaca or cotton are too heavy for the giant pom pom and will drag the hat right off your head.

Gauge is included in the pattern.

The template for the giant pom pom is also included in the pattern. Photo instructions for pom pom making can be located in my Flickr account. Make sure to click on the pictures to read the written instructions that accompany. For the giant pom pom I recommend cutting with sturdy scissors rather than an x-acto knife.
