Who doesn’t love a floral crochet blanket?

There are so many absolutely gorgeous floral inspired crochet blankets around. So many in fact that it is often difficult to choose one to make.

So, for this blanket, I really wanted to design something that would stand out, and be rather different… something bold and colourful. While having this in mind and sitting down with my coffee, sketching out some design ideas, I found myself doodling my usual little pen doodle that I scribble while I am thinking… (in fact you will find many of these little doodles all around the edges of my highschool study notes from a kabillion years ago… yup a kabillion years ago ;-)

Then it hit me, perhaps I could somehow incorporate this doodle into my blanket design. While it is not quite exactly the same, I do think you could see where my inspiration came from?
What is up with the tongue twister name: ‘Pretty Preppy Petals’ Blanket?

I do love a catchy name for my designs! I already had ‘Pretty Petals Blanket’ scribbled down in my notes. I asked my teenager to help me think of an extra descriptive word to add to the name that plays on the ‘p’ alliteration… and she said… “Preppy - Mom, it’s so preppy!“

So I looked it up, and ‘Preppy’ is a slang term that can refer to a casual but upscale fashion style. So it can be an old or commonly used casual design style, that has been transformed by injecting in some fun, bright/bold, and hopefully ‘on trend’ colours with playful patterns (i.e. stripes/lightning bolts/zig-zags/smiley faces etc)

I was so thrilled, as I think that totally sums up this blanket design really well! Don’t you?

Difficulty level: Intermediate/Advanced (Due to the many colour changes and carrying multiple strands of yarn. This blanket design also consists of 3 different tapestry motifs.)

Yarn: Minimum of 4 different colours per hexagon/half hexagon / Minimum of 3 colours per diamond.

Gauge: The overall size/gauge of each motif doesn’t have to exactly match my measurements in the pattern as you will be making as many hexagons/half hexagons/diamonds that you need to reach the required size of blanket you want. However, it is important that each motif you make will be the same size to each other, so they match up when joined. Therefore it’s best to use consistent tension, the same weight yarn for all your colours, and use the same hook size throughout.
