My Aunt Sue and I spent a week in the Puget Sound area of Washington State. We made up our own yarn crawl and hit about a dozen shops and an alpaca farm. As usual, I had to design something to commemorate this trip: a diamond-shaped garter stitch and lace shawl. The top of the diamond is folded over to create a slight collar. The 3-color sample is worked in stripes and made in fingering weight Lotus Merino/silk/yak yarn from The Artful Ewe in Port Gamble, Washington. A second sample has been done in two colors of Knitting for Olive Heavy Merino. It would also look great in a single color. This is a great stash buster project, and may be adapted to any weight yarn.

Materials
Fingering weight yarns: approximately 900 yards/823 meters.
The Artful Ewe Lotus (400 yd/366 m per 100 g ball/skein); one ball in each of three colors: Purple, Red, and Multicolored; or any similar yarn. Gauge: 22 sts/18 rows in 4 inches (10 cm) in garter stitch, on US5 (3.75 mm) circular needle, measured after blocking.

OR

Worsted weight yarns: approximately 755 yards/691 meters. Knitting for Olive Heavy Merino (137 yd/125 m per 50 g ball/skein); four balls in Blue Tit; two balls in Morning Haze; or any similar yarn. Gauge: 14 sts/12 rows in 4 inches (10 cm) in garter stitch, on US9 (5.5 mm) circular needle, measured after blocking.

OR

Sport or DK weight yarns: approximately 800-850 yards/732-778 meters.

Needles:
Fingering: US5 (3.75 mm) circular needles, 32”/80 cm or longer, or size needed to achieve gauge.

OR

Worsted: US 9 (5.5 mm) circular needles, 32”/80 cm or longer, or size needed to achieve gauge.

OR any size needle that gives you a gauge that you like.

Length along shawl spine: approximately 35”/89 cm.
