So wonderful time to start My Roots Series; a pattern series with the theme of our Estonian knitting folklore.

Pühalepa Hat incorporates a pop of bright color to elevate a traditional stranded-colorwork hat to new levels of chic style. An unexpected color for the cast-on edge and a pompom create a bold eye-catching look. The design features our traditional old mitten pattern of Pühalepa flies from the Island of Hiiumaa. It is a small, fairytale like quiet Estonian island, where time stands still. It is a place for those desiring to be somewhere between a sauna, jogging along the beach with highland cattle, or standing thoughtfully in a totally calm field.

Error note: “On round 58, do not decrease for the first stitch, but knit the last two stitches of the row together instead. Everything else is correct.”

Size: Brim circumference is approximately 46cm/18in unstretched, blocked. Hat stretches to fit a 54-57cm / 21-22.5in head circumference.
Length from brim to crown – 25cm / 10in

Yarn for sample hat:
For hat body: Two shades of Jamieson and Smith 2 Ply Jumper weight, 100% Shetland wool, 114m/125yards per 25g/0.88ounces.
Yarn MC: Approx. 1.5 skein, 160m/174yards. Shown in colorway FC45 (light beige);
Yarn CC: Approx. 0.8 skein, 92m/100yards. Shown in colorway FC44Mix (dark brown).
Or any other 4 Ply weight/ fingering yarn.
For (optional) pompom:
Approx 25m/27.5 yards of MC.

Needles: 2.5mm (US 1 ½ ) and 3.00mm (US 2 ½) circular needles (at least 40 cm/16“ long) and dpns (or your preferred needles for working small circumferences in the round) for finishing the crown.
Use whatever size needles it takes you to get the right gauge. Needle sizes are recommendations only. Take time to save time and always use the needle size necessary to achieve given gauge (match the tension).

Gauge: 30 sts and 31 rounds = 10cm/ 4” in pattern worked in the round with 3.00mm (US 2 ½) needle, after washing and blocking.
You should always knit your swatch the same way that the pattern is knit. In this case - in the round. Block your swatch as you will your finished garment and allow it to dry fully before measuring.

Skills Required:
Knitting in the round, stranded colorwork.

Other tools: 1 stitch marker, tapestry needle for weaving in ends, blocking tools, pompom maker.

And thank you my dear test knitters. Without you, this pattern isn’t here ….
