Pumpkins are now a common symbol of Halloween; being carved into lanterns called “Jack-O’-Lanterns”. Throughout Britain and Ireland carving lanterns from vegetables, usually the turnip or swede, was an old tradition at Halloween however immigrants to North America had easy access to the native pumpkin which was bigger and easier to carve.
