Gauge is not important for this pattern. You can use whatever 4-ply yarn is your favorite. I usually use Red Heart. I like to get 4 skeins of each color so that it is easy to hold the 4 strands of yarn together, but if you prefer, for the smaller amounts of color (the crust and the whipped cream) you can buy one skein of each color and then wind it into 4 balls.
