Purse No. 3 by Miss Watts

Purse No. 3

Out of print. This pattern was available for free.

Published in 1840, this pattern is one of a series of patterns for what the Victorians called a long purse and is now generally called a miser’s purse. This one is a simple two-row pattern. It can be made in any size that suits the purposes of the knitter.

No information is given about gauge or needles, but it should be knit of “purse silk” on fine steel needles. No information is given about making up the final purse, but it should be folded in half and sewn up such that the two short sides are closed as are the top and bottom thirds of the long seam. The center third of the long seam is left open for access. Rings slipped onto the purse keep it closed.
