Gently zigzagging lines radiate through a spectrum of colors in this highly textured shawl. Radiant Waves is a perfect project for a gradient mini skein set or for stashbusting leftover bits of fingering weight yarn.

This asymmetrical triangular shawl is worked back and forth from one tip to the opposite side. It combines cables with small interludes of mosaic knitting. Increases along the top edge and decreases along the bottom create its biased shape.

Cabling without a cable needle is recommended to increase the speed of knitting.

Gauge is not critical for this pattern, but using a different yarn weight or needle size will affect the size of the finished shawl.

Sizing and Colors
The sample shawl uses roughly equal amounts (about 30 g each) of six mini skeins plus a main color. Knitters may choose to use more or fewer mini skeins by maintaining the pattern of wavy cables followed by a mosaic triangle.

The size of the shawl may also be adapted by working more or fewer repeats of the cable pattern within each contrasting color section to increase or decrease the length of the section.

Size
66” / 168 cm in length and 19” / 48 cm deep at deepest point

Yarn
Approximately 840 yds / 768 m of fingering weight yarn (about 120 yds / 110 m each of a main color and 6 contrasting colors)

Sample shown in Fiber Optic Yarns Kashmir (80% superwash merino, 10% cashmere, 10% nylon; 420 yds / 381 m per 4 oz / 114 g skein) in Boneyard (MC)

Fiber Optic Yarns Gradient Six Pack in Kashmir (80% superwash merino, 10% cashmere, 10% nylon; 6 skeins of 140 yds each, 8 oz and 840 yds total) in Islander (CC1-CC6)

Needles
US size 4 / 3.5 mm circular needles, at least 32” / 80 cm in length

Gauge
30 sts x 34 rows per 4” / 10 cm in the Wavy Cables pattern after blocking
30 sts x 54 rows per 4” / 10 cm in the Mosaic patterns after blocking

Exact gauge is not critical but will affect the size of the finished shawl and the amount of yarn needed.

Notions
Yarn needle; cable needle

Errata
Dec 7, 2022 -- an updated version of the pattern is available that corrects confusing notation in the Mosaic Chart instructions.
