Rátnu is a Sea Sámi traditional wool tapestry, usually made on the ancient warp-weighted loom.

The Sámi are the Indigenous people of Sápmi, which is the area stretching across what is now known as Northern Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Russian Kola Peninsula.

This sweater is inspired by the rátnu hanging in my grandmother’s house.
It is an attempt to translate the histories of the threads from the weaving pattern into knitted stitches,
assembling it together as a garment to carry.
Both as a way to get closer to my Sea Sámi roots,
and with the intent of contributing to stitching together some of the holes made throughout the colonialisation of Sápmi and its people.

❣️
Feel free to make and wear this sweater, whether or not you carry Sámi roots, as long as awareness of its Indigenous origins is present in your making and carrying of the garment.
