This is a simple, dropped sleeve jumper with a crew neck, designed to be knitted to your preferred length – short or long, it’s up to you. The neckline is inspired by traditional woven fisherman smocks and is shaped to reflect the style I associate with these garments.

When people pop into the Purl &Jane Studio, they often admire the children’s designs and say, “I’d knit that if there was a version in adult sizes.” Slowly but surely, I’ve been turning those favourites into patterns for grown-ups. I say designing rather than grading up because it’s not as simple as just adding more stitches – if it was, there’d be no need to write patterns in different sizes!

The Ravenscar Jumper is an adult version of the Hubberholme Jumper, which has been requested many times. Like the original, it’s inspired by my love (or perhaps obsession!) with the seaside and the tradition of fishermen’s gainsays – or guernseys, as they’re also known.

CONSTRUCTION
The back, front and two sleeves are knitted flat from the bottom up in separate pieces and joined together. The sleeves are drop. The neck edge is picked up and
knitted. There are two pockets, these are knitted in.

TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, decreasing at neck shaping, increasing. Pocket placement. Joining seams. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your pieces: three needle cast off and mattress stitch.

YARN
7(8:8:9:9) 100g hanks of WYS Bluefaced Leicester Aran.
100% British Bluefaced Leicester wool, 166m/182yds per 100g

SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
4.5mm and 5mm.

GAUGE (tension)
20 stitches and 24 rows to 10cm/4ins square over pattern. I obtained this gauge with 5mm needles.
It is important to obtain the correct gauge so do work a swatch before you start the pattern and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
I recommend a positive ease of 2-6ins/5-15cm at the chest.
