I wanted to knit a very basic small shawl/scarf/neckerchief to show off the lovely Noro Silk Garden Sock yarn I’d bought. It had great colour changes and I thought it would be fabulous to keep me cosy while walking the dog and cheer me up in the dark mornings with the bright colours.

When I started looking for a pattern, I started to get confused about how the mechanics of a top down shawl worked. It didn’t seem to make sense to cast on just a few stitches when that would be the long top edge. It took me quite a few goes to realise what was happening so I wrote it all down in case it would help anyone else. I’ve also designed it so that for each row in the main part of the shawl the methodology is identical so there’s no confusion as to whether it’s an increase row or not. Perfect for beginners or TV knitting!

A huge thank you to everyone who has downloaded the pattern. I do hope you enjoy knitting it! It is designed to be knitted with just one skein, but if you are nervous about having enough to cast off with, I suggest that (if funds allow), you buy two skeins, allowing yourself more freedom as to size, and use the remainder to knit yourself a matching pair of socks.:-)
