This hat is designed to use up leftover yarn and is easily modifiable. Both foreground and background colors can be changed as you run out of the colors you started with. Not enough yarn for earflaps? No worries, just leave them off. Have some extra? Then maybe add some rows at the tippy top between decreases, to make the pointy end even pointier. Or add a bigger tassel and some cords at the ends of the earflaps.

Sizes are based on yarn weight, but you can experiment with different numbers of repeats as well. The base pattern assumes 6 repeats of 24 stitches each. You could try 5 repeats to make a small hat with a heavier gauge yarn or 7 repeats to make a large hat with a lighter yarn. Do remember to swatch both the band and a repeat of the pattern over 24 stitches to make sure you get the size you want.
