This pattern was inspired by the strands of bulbs my grandfather gave to my parents the year I was born. He told them that now that they had a child, they needed outdoor decorations. Every year, I would help my parents untangle the strands and wrap them carefully around the bushes in the front of our house. Now that I live in an apartment with no outside space, I decided that I needed a strand of these bulbs to hang inside and voilà - this pattern was born.

A few notes:

  • Gauge is not important to this project. What is important is creating a tightly-knit fabric so that none of the stuffing pops through.

  • The yardage indicated (10-15 yd) is per bulb. If you only want to make one bulb, you will only use about 10 - 15 yd or so. If you want to make three bulbs, you will need about 30 - 45 yd. Just multiply the number of lights you want to make by the number of yards given, and that’s how many yards you’ll need.

  • You can use any colors you want/have (it is an excellent way to use up scraps from your stash). I chose red, blue, green, orange, and white, in keeping with the bulbs I remember, but be creative!

Hope your holidays are merry and bright!
