You will need 4 colors of fingering weight yarn, about 70 yds. per contrast color, and 100 yds. for the ribbing, heels & toes main color. Feel free to use more colors if you are looking for a great pattern to use up leftover colors. Solids, tonals, gradients and long repeat self-striping yarns will probably look better than variegated colors. I prefer to use the beefier fingering weights with 180-220 yds. per 50 grams.

There are two choices for the toe decreases--a standard wedge toe and a spiral toe (my new favorite) which does not require grafting.
