Reversible Checkerboard Scarf
This is a double knitted Keyhole/Miss Marple scarf that features a reversible checkerboard pattern across the neck section and keyholes/tips that can be one of two colours depending on the layer being viewed. Thanks to its wool and the thickness of its double-knitted fabric, it is as warm as it is elegant! The scarf is knitted flat using an invisible cast-on and it features garter stitch, selvages, common increases/decreases and their mirrored counterparts for the reverse side of the fabric (timestamped links to video demonstrations are included for more complex skills). Chart included for checkerboard section.
SIZE/GAUGE:
The scarf is one size, but details on how to alter the width and length of each section of the scarf are included in the pattern.
It measures 69cm total in length. Its width across the checkerboard section is roughly 8cm and the width across the widest point of the tips is roughly 8.5cm.
- Double Knitting Gauge (Checkerboard): 20 sts x 24 rows = 10cm
- Double Knitted Garter Stitch Gauge: 22 sts x 40 rows = 10cm
- Stockinette Gauge: 22 sts x 32 sts = 10cm
If your gauge turns out different, adjusting your needle size can help.
YARN:
Hobbii Friends Wool (100% Wool); 50g(1.75oz)/100m(109yds) per skein
- Main Colour: Cranberry (48) - 28g/61yds used
- Contrast Colour: Off-White (02) - 29g/63yds used
You can substitute with aran/medium yarn that meets gauge.
NEEDLES:
Three 4mm (US 6) needles (One will be a spare needle).
Note that single-pointed, double-pointed or circular needles can be used to make the scarf, but it is preferable to use DPNs when preparing to graft stitches at the end because you can slip the stitches onto the left side of the needle then simply slide them along to the right side, where they will be immediately ready for grafting.
NOTIONS:
Darning needle for sewing in ends and scissors to cut ends. A stitch holder is optional.
Enjoy!
