This asymmetrical shawl pairs simple garter stitch with visually interesting textured bands to show off two or more colors of Magpie Fiber’s lovely Swanky DK base. Beginning with just one stitch, the pattern is designed to use almost every last bit of yarn. Any extra yarn can be easily used for an additional stripe or two at the end.

The Ridley Shawl’s name is aquatically derived, as two species of sea turtles are called “Kemp’s Ridley” and “Olive Ridley” (my daughter is an aquarium buff). The dimensional look of the cabled stitch pattern reminds me of newly hatched sea turtles, making their way to the sea!

This pattern contains both fully charted and written instructions.

A video tutorial for working the shawl’s cable without a cable needle can be found HERE.

Recommended Yarn:
Magpie Fibers Swanky DK, two contrasting skeins — 80% superwash merino / 10% cashmere / 10% nylon — 250 yds (229 m) per 115 g. Sample used most all of 500 yds (457 m).

Shown in colorways Stormfront (Main Color — MC) and Tidepool (Contrast Color— CC). Only 6g remained of CC after last textured band. AS INSURANCE, you may wish to purchase another skein of your CC, or to use a third color (CC2) for the contrast garter stripes only.

Sizing:
31” (79 cm) x 46” (117 cm), 56” (142 cm) along increased edge.

Gauge:
21 sts and 28 rows to 4” (10 cm) in garter st, or 22 sts and 28 rows in pattern -- strongly blocked.

PLEASE NOTE: Changes in gauge will affect finished size, look of motifs, and amount of yarn used. A looser gauge may not leave enough yarn to finish longest textured band. To meet these dimensions, use needle size that gives gauge.

Needles:
US 6 (4 mm) circular needles (32” or above is best for longest sections), US 9 (5.5 mm) needle for bind-off.

Other Materials:
21 Stitch markers (two removable), cable needle in appropriate size (optional), tapestry needle.

Pattern has been test knit and professionally tech edited.
