Rock Salt Shawl!

Knit this shawl from the top down around a foundation of mitered squares! The final shape can be blocked dramatically or plainly, but either variation has some nice shaping that creates a kind of blocky curve along the topline—the upturned corners have a nice hug-like effect that makes the shawl easier to wear.

This project is open-ended, making it an excellent project for handspun yarns or special leftovers. It can be knit to any size, and only requires ~450 yards of yarn to knit the mini-shawl shown.

The sample is on the smaller end, and made mostly from chain-plied wool handspun.

Materials:

  • 450-750 yards of fingering-weight yarn; the main sample in red is shown in handspun
  • 1 48” circular needles in US4/3.5mm, or size needed for gauge
  • tapestry needle for weaving in ends
  • 4+ removable stitch markers

Gauge:
Gauge is 15 sts and 52 rows over 4”/10cm of garter stitch, worked flat and blocked lightly.

Measurements:
This shawl is a little open-ended—the final dimensions will depend on the final section, which is knit to custom dimensions and blocking choices. The sample is 47”/1.2m long, and about 10”/25cm deep. The outer swoops, as blocked here, are about 21”/53cm long.
