The Boy Human (modeling the original hat) has had great male role models in his life. One of them was Brandon, his guitar teacher for several years. In addition to being a fantastic teacher and guitar player, Brandon was a friend, confidant, and all-around nice person. I wanted to honor that relationship by knitting (of course), and I wanted make him something one-of-a-kind. This hat design was the result.

The wickerwork pattern is from Barbara G. Walker’s A Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns, adapted for knitting in the round. What makes this wickerwork hat distinctive is its attractive crown decreases.

I designed the hat to fit a large head, but it can be easily resized by reducing the cast-on by one or more multiples of 8 stitches. As designed, Brandon’s hat used 180 yards of worsted-weight yarn.

This is my first published pattern, and I hope you enjoy making it. Happy knitting!

02/02/20: I uploaded version 2-02 of the pattern to add metric sizes for needles and a progress checkbox grid for the body of the hat, provide links to videos showing how to cross stitches without a cable needle, and clarify movement of stitches in the crown decreases.
