Roman Laurel Wreath shawl is reminiscent of the crown that was given to the ancient Grecians to celebrate important events in their lives and victories in the first Olympic games. You can see the olive leaves in the simple lace pattern of the applied edging. We all have times in our lives where we have had to push deep within ourselves to overcome challenges. Utilize the Roman Laurel Wreath to celebrate all victories in your life!

MATERIALS:

  • 1 skein (approx. 400 yds) fingering weight yarn.
  • One US5/3.75mm 32” circular needle.
  • Tapestry needle

GAUGE:

16 sts and 36 rows = 4” in garter stitch, after blocking. The finished shawl measures 12 ½” deep by 45” wingspan before blocking and 15” deep by 70” wingspan after blocking. It is very important to get gauge unless you have a skein of yarn that is greater than 400 yrds. With a 400 yrd skein there will only be approximately 8 yrds left.

PATTERN NOTES:
• The body of the shawl is knit from the top down and the lace border is attached lengthwise afterwards.
• Shawl is increased by six stitches on every right side row. Do not slip the first stitch of each row. By slipping the first stitch, the edge of the shawl will tighten and make it harder to block.
• To increase or decrease the size of the shawl, increase the total stitch count of the body/garter section of the shawl by 4 stitches. Body/garter section must be divisible by 4 plus 6 stitches before moving into the edging section.
• On the wrong side row, knit into the first stitch of the double yarn over, and then drop the second yarn over. This will keep the edge from becoming too tight.
