Created to protect the forests of Middle-Earth, Ents were originally sentient treelike creatures until the Elves taught them how to speak. Incredibly strong and patient, they can walk through the forests and converse with the trees, protecting them from Orcs and other threats. When Saruman begins to clear cut the forests to aid Sauron, destroying every living thing in his path, the Ents have an Entmoot—a rare gathering of Ents—and decide to fight back by breeching the dams surrounding Isengard.

Alternating light-side and dark-side brioche gives this Entmoot-inspired cowl the illusion of depth and a bark-like texture. An Italian cast on and tubular bind off allow the stitches to flow smoothly over the edges of the fabric, while sporadic knotholes lend extra personality. Worked in the round from the bottom up, it can easily be customized by adding more repeats or lengthening/shortening the tree trunks.
