I was incredibly fortunate to be gifted a couple of hanks of hand-dyed merino, dyed especially with assigned pooling projects in mind by the lovely team at Dreamfire Artisan Yarns.

As I was caking the yarn, I had a clear vision of delicate rosebuds from the Damask rose. For centuries, the Damask rose (Rosa damascena) has symbolised beauty and love, and I hope that knitting this piece brings you the same sense of joy and pleasure.

Assigned pooling is such a fun knitting technique, where the cleverly dyed yarn truly plays the starring role. By taking advantage of colour changes within a variegated hank and pairing them with a richly textured stitch for the accent colour—boom!—the motif appears almost magically. Special thanks go to Dawn Barker, the creative force behind this inspiring technique.

This design invites you to make it your own by deciding how often the rosebuds appear, giving you plenty of room for creativity and experimentation.

The shawl (scarf) has a very simple construction, and once the setup is complete and you’ve practised forming the buds, it becomes an easy, rhythmic knit—no need to check the pattern on every row.

The pattern is written for one size, but it can easily be made larger or smaller to suit your preferences.
