The pattern sample was knitted using Auchen Light, a lightweight DK or Sport weight yarn (260metres/ 284 yards to 100grams), produced by Black Isle Yarns .
It is inspired by the Double Disc symbol on a Pictish/Celtic carved stone discovered here in the Highlands of Scotland.

Standing over 2.6 metres tall, the Rosemarkie cross-slab is a masterpiece of early medieval sculpture. Carved by Pictish artists over 1,200 years ago, it once probably marked the entrance to a thriving monastic site, where faith and artistry flourished.
One side of the slab features a striking cross. The reverse tells a different story, displaying mysterious Pictish symbols, including crescents, V-rods, and a double-disc. The precise meaning of these is lost to time, but their beauty and complexity endure.
Today, the cross-slab is preserved at Groam House Museum in Rosemarkie, in the Scottish Highlands, where it remains at the heart of our collection.

By creating this cowl, you are knitting yourself into a tradition that began over a millennium ago, as well as supporting Groam House Museum to continue to protect and celebrate this remarkable history.
