This shawl was created as a celebration of the original colorway from Pro-Verbial Club by A Verb For Keeping Warm - Smitten. Its beautiful hue is brought to life by using several natural dyes including madder root. And so the inspiration for this design was drawn from rubia, which is another name of madder. Berries and leaves, flowers and roots were interpreted in knit textures, coming together in a delicious project of the best “just one more row” kind.

Rubia features a modified boomerang shape reminiscent
of a rounded triangle, which is easy to style and wear.
The pattern combines garter stitch, eyelets, nupps, and simple lace into a delightfully entertaining knit. It’s easy to increase or decrease the wingspan of a shawl depending on the desired finished size or available yardage.
Lace pattern is both written out row-by-row and charted, and a video tutorial for nupps is provided.

  • US 4 / 3.5mm needles (straight or on a long cable) or the size needed to obtain gauge
  • A crochet hook of a matching size for nupps

Gauge

  • 29 sts and 46 rows in 4” / 10cm in Garter Stitch, unblocked
  • 25 sts and 40 rows in 4” / 10cm in Garter Stitch, blocked
  • Note that difference in gauge will affect the required yardage and the finished size of the shawl

Construction

  • The shawl is worked from a corner towards the edge with the modified boomerang shaping similar to a rounded triangle.

  • The shaping is achieved with increases along one edge and decreases along the other.

  • The body of the shawl is created by a sequence of stripes in 4 stitch patterns: garter, eyelets, nupps, and lace.

  • The bind off is embellished with nupps. It can be blocked out to a wavy edge.

  • Optional tassels can be added for a more boho-inspired look.

  • The size of the finished shawl can be adjusted by making fewer or more repeats of the stripes. Notes on this are provided.
