RÚNA
These mittens for special occasions were onginally knit with a very tine, silky yarn. They are very different from other mittens in the Textile Museum. Guðrún Jónsdóttir (1916-2014) from Hnjúkur knitted and donated these mittens to the collection.
The thumb gusset is knitted on the side, the palms are stockinette sttch, and the backs are a peacock stitch. The bottom hem is a turned picot edge. These mittens can be knit in a variety of yarns.
The peacock pattern is fun to knit for the experienced knitter.
There are two yarn options for these mittens - silk or mohair.
Choose one type of yarn and use it throughout the pattern.
Needles: Size US 0/2 mm set of 5 DPNs. Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
OTHER MATERIALS 2 stitch markers, scrap yarn, and tapestry needle.
Gauge:
Silk version: 38 stitches and 40 rounds in stocking stitch, after blocking = 4 in/10 cm.
Mohair version: 34 stitches and 44 rounds in stocking stitch, after blocking = 4 in/ 10 cm.
If the gauge is not correct, the mittens might not fit properly.
