SABAI Sweater
The SABAI Sweater is a simple pullover with a boat neck. It has a loose fit and relatively narrow sleeves for contrast—oversized yet elegant. The sweater is very easy to knit, requiring only a few techniques, making it ideal for beginners. It can be worked from either cotton or a lightweight virgin wool-cashmere blend and is a perfect companion for spring and summer in both versions.
The SABAI Sweater is worked seamlessly top down. First, the neckline is worked and increases are made for the shoulder slope. The neckline can be worked with (right picture) or without (left picture) short rows, depending on the desired level of difficulty. For beginners, I recommend the version without short rows. For the armholes, front and back are each worked separately back and forth. Then the stitches of front and back are joined together and the body is worked in the round until the sweater has reached the desired length. For the sleeves, stitches are picked up from the side edges of front and back and sleeves are worked in the round in stockinette stitch.
Techniques used: German Short Rows, left- and right leaning knitted and purled increases.
Sizes
XS (S) M (L) XL (XXL)
To fit chest circumference:
74-81 (82-89) 90-97 (98-107) 108-117 (118-127) cm / 30-32
(33-35) 36-38 (38-42) 43-46 (47-50)”
Measurments
Chest circumference:
102 (110) 116 (124) 132 (142) cm / 40.2 (43.3) 45.7 (48.8) 52 (55.9)”
Total length:
51 (53) 55 (57) 60 (64) cm / 20.1 (20.9) 21.7 (22.4) 23.6 (25.2)”
The sweater should have a positive ease of approx. 20 cm / 7.9”. For larger sizes (XL and XXL), slightly less positive ease of about 15 cm / 5.9” is recommended. For example, if you have a chest circumference of 94 cm / 37”, you should knit size M. With a height of 1.76 m / 5’9” and a chest circumference of 89 cm / 35”, I am wearing the sweater here in size S (natural white) and size M (dark blue)

Tips for choosing yarn
The instructions recommend several yarn qualities. Here are a little more details about them:
‚Palet’ is a pure cotton yarn with a length of 160 m per 50 g. Knitted with ndl size 4.0 mm (US 6/UK 8), the sweater has a nice loose and flowing fit.
‚Como’ and ‚Como Cashmere’ are so-called ‚Superlight’ yarn qualities. Despite a yardage of 120 m per 25 g, these yarns have the characteristics of a DK yarn. The sweater is therefore light as a feather and airy.
Needles
40-50 cm / 16-20” circular needle size 4.0 mm (US 6/UK 8) (for casting on for neckline and for sleeves).
60 cm / 24” circular needle size 4.0 mm (US 6/UK 8) (for neckline) and 80 - 100 cm / 32 – 40” circular needle size 4.0 mm (US 6/UK 8) (for body), optionally a set of dpns size 4.0 mm (US 6/UK 8) (for the lower part of the sleeves).
Those who use the ‚Magic Loop Method‘, don’t need a short circ. ndl or a set of dpns.
Gauge / Tension
In stockinette stitch using ndl size 4.0 mm: 21 sts x 30-31 rows = 10 x 10 cm / 4” square
The swatches were washed and measured lying flat. Please adjust needle size if necessary, to obtain correct gauge.
