MATERIALS

YARN:
This garment is designed to be made with three different yarn options while matching the same gauge.

  1. Fingering weight wool (or wool blend, or wool-like) + mohair–silk lace held double:This combination of yarns creates a light but warm cardigan. Great for transitional weather. The mohair adds a touch of luxury and since yarns are double stranded, it is a great option for stash busting, mixing colors or creating an easy fade effect (as in the pattern sample using minis)
  2. Sport weight yarn:This option is perfect for a light summer cardigan since the stitches are open, lacy and airy. Use cotton, linen or bamboo for warmer climates (as in the brown sample). Use wool for cooler weather while still keeping the fabric light.
  3. DK weight yarn:Using a heavier weight with the same gauge will create a fuller more compact fabric which, in turn, will create a much warmer and structured cardigan.

COLOR OPTIONS:
The pattern is written to change colors every other row (i.e. every row pair). When working with fingering + mohair, change only the fingering weight yarn color while the mohair remains the same to create a lovely unified marbled effect. When working with sport and DK weight, you can also opt to change colors in the same manner to create a striped garment. For all options, using a single color throughout is also a good choice, as in the brown sample.

AMOUNTS REQUIRED:
Approx 1715 (1865, 2040, 2190, 2380) (2565, 2725, 2945, 3085) m / 1875 (2040, 2235, 2395, 2605) (2805, 2980, 3220, 3375) yds for a hip-length cardigan and 1160 (1255, 1370, 1475, 1600) (1730, 1840, 2000, 2085) m / 1270 (1375, 1500, 1615, 1750) (1890, 2010, 2190, 2280) for a cropped cardigan.

When making option 1 (fingering + mohair), you will need the same amount of EACH kind of yarn.

If striping, divide the total by the number of colors used. Keep in mind that long tapered sleeves use about 430 (440, 455, 485, 505) (550, 585, 635, 645) m / 470 (480, 500, 530, 555) (600, 640, 695, 705) yds; and the edging and pockets use approximately 15% on a hip-length and 6% on a cropped length of the total yardage. Add 145 (160, 175, 185, 205) (220, 235, 245, 260) m / 160 (175, 195, 205, 225) (240, 255, 270, 285) yds for each 10 cm / 4 in extra of length.

Yardage provided includes 5% extra for swatching and margin of error. Amounts will vary if length is adjusted or hip shaping is added.

Yarn used for the Fade Hip-length sample is Botanical Yarns, 4ply Merino Sock (fingering weight, 75% superwash wool, 25% nylon, 100g, 425 m) in colors of the 2023 Advent Calendar (24 x 20 g mini skeins + 40g of stash yarn for edging and pockets) DOUBLE STRANDED with Hobbii, Friends Kid Silk (lace weight, 72% Mohair, 25% Silk, 3% Wool, 25g, 200 m / 218 yds) in color Grey (119) (11 balls total).

Yarn used for the Cropped Brown sample is Pascuali, Sole (Sport weight, 90% Pima Cotton, 10% Cashmere Wool, 50g, 140m / 153 yds) in color Cinnamon 89 (11 balls total).

HOOKS:
4 mm or size needed to meet gauge for the body, and 4.5mm or 0.5 mm bigger hook for sleeve and body edging.

The brown sample used a 4.5 mm hook to meet gauge for the body.

NOTIONS:
tapestry needle, stitch markers, scissors, 4 – 10 buttons (approx 1.5 cm in diameter).
