Safe Bet Socks are the pair I knit again and again.
Over the years, I’ve tried many different sock constructions, but I kept coming back to the same technique choices, the ones that feel good to knit and even better to wear. This pattern brings all of those favourites together in one clear, beginner-friendly recipe.
The Old Norwegian cast-on creates a stretchy, polished edge. The flexible garter heel flap and roomy gusset make the fit forgiving and comfortable. And the tidy star toe gives the sock a clean, satisfying finish – no grafting required!
This is the sock I reach for when I want something relaxing, when I’m teaching someone how socks work, or when I’m knitting a gift I know will be worn and loved.
Designed as a true “recipe-style” pattern, Safe Bet Socks are perfect for solids, stripes, leftovers, or playful colour combinations. Whether this is your very first pair or your fiftieth, these are the techniques I return to every time. Just grab your needles and enjoy the process. The pattern includes 5 sizes, and you can tweak the fit even more just by playing with yarn or needle size.
YARN AND YARDAGE: 100 g of any fingering weight sock yarn (420 m / 100 g).
NEEDLES 2.25 mm needles suitable for working small circumference in the round.
GAUGE 16 sts x 20 rnds of stockinette = 5 x 5 cm / 2 x 2 inches after blocking.
SIZES
1, 2 (3, 4, 5) = junior, S (M, L, XL)
Finished sock foot circumference is 15, 17.5 (20, 22.5, 25) cm / 6, 7 (7.75, 8.75, 9.75) inches.
Choose a size that gives you 1–2.5 cm / 0.5–1 inches of negative ease.
I’ve also recorded a companion video where I walk you through the construction and share extra tips. You can find it here:
