Safflower fun Facts

❤️ Safflowers are summer annuals.

❤️ American saffron or Mexican saffron is safflower, a member of the daisy family and the same plant that is used to produce safflower oil.

❤️ Each stalk can grow between 1-5 flowerhead.

❤️ The flower heads have been used as a source of red and yellow dyes for clothing and food.

❤️ Safflower seeds have been used to make vegetable oil.

❤️ According to Owlcation, “Scientists have managed to insert the human insulin gene into safflower plants. The gene becomes active and the plants produce insulin, which is present in their seeds”.

❤️ Birds enjoy safflower seeds!

❤️ Safflower was once used to color the tape wrapped around bundles of legal documents, creating the original “red tape”.

❤️ Safflower has a rich sweet aroma. Its flavor is mild and has been described as having common flavors like chocolate and tobacco. However the dried flowers is said to have no flavors.

❤️ Safflower is known to be expensive as it consists of crocus stamens that must be extracted by hand. It is also said to take about 70,000 flowers just to get one pound of the safflower spice. Perhaps the labor behind creating the spice is what makes it so costly.
