The perfect beginner’s sock pattern!

One of my favourite places to visit when we go on holiday are the beautiful little fishing villages, where time seems to stand still. They often continue the historic fishing methods that have stood the test of time and that still stock their local village fishmongers and chip shops. Of course, when on holiday it’s essential to have a sock knitting project with me that I can take out and about with me and work on wherever we sit to take in the view - a simple ‘vanilla’ pattern is so easy to work on you can almost knit it without looking, perfect for taking in the view while you knit!

Size: one size, Medium, to fit average ladies feet (approx. 22cm foot circumference). The length is adjustable as you try them on as you go.

You will need:

  • Approx 60g of sock/4 ply yarn (approx 240m/263yds)
  • Contrasting mini skein of yarn if required, for heels and toes
  • 2.5mm short (23cm or 30cm) circular knitting needles - or your preference of double-pointed needles or long circular needle for magic loop
  • Stitch markers to mark the end of rounds (+ middle of rounds for gusset and toe decreases).
  • Scissors
  • Darning needle for ends

Gauge: not critical for this pattern as you work until the piece is a certain length before moving on to the next stage, but please be aware that if your gauge is tighter or looser it will affect the total meterage of yarn used.

The pattern includes a full glossary of terms.

The pattern has not been tested by anyone other than myself (for multiple pairs of socks), but if you see any problems just let me know!

Enjoy the pattern!
