Sailmaker top is easy and quick to make and its unusual construction will keep you interested to the last stitch! The diagonal construction combined with alternating solid and variegated yarns brings out the best of both yarn colors, creating a watercolor-like effect.

The larger segment of the top is worked first and in one piece. This segment begins with a simple triangular motif which is worked up to the first armhole and determines the length of the top (the top of the triangle becomes the base of the armhole). Then the rest of this side will be gradually filled in with diagonal rows until reaching the desired body width, armhole depth and shoulder width.

Two smaller triangles are made to fill in the other side of the top. These triangles are joined together with diagonal rows which create the shoulder and then this single piece is sewn on to the already-completed first side.
