Beaded medallions worked in the round with vertical pillars of double yarnovers border a simple diagonal lace center. Samarran was designed to evoke the curling script that adorns ornate desert buildings with glittering blue tiles in the bright sun.

Plymouth Yarn Company, Alpaca Prima [100% Superfine alpaca, 31/2oz/100g; 363 yds/332m]; Color: 1130, 3 skeins

1 set US #7/4.5 mm 24 inch circular needle

1 set US #7/4.5 mm 47 inch circular needle
1 US #13/0.75mm crochet hook (for placing beads, optional)

Tapestry needle, #360 Size 6 Toho Beads, Color #952 Sea Foam- lined light topaz rainbow, waste yarn for provisional cast on.

GAUGE
16 sts/27 rows = 4” main body chart after blocking; gauge is not critical for this pattern but may affect yardage.

PATTERN NOTES
The center of this shawl is begun with a provisional cast on and worked back and forth on the shorter circular needle as a restangle. When the length is complete, the stitches are left live and border stitches are picked up and worked along the other 3 remaining edges. The piece is then joined to be worked in the round with markers to indicate the square corner patterning sections.
