Samcheong-dong Cardigan
Korean, Danish and German versions available from website.
⁓⁓⁓⁓⁓
Samcheong-dong Cardigan is designed around the meeting of past and present found in the Samcheong-dong area of Seoul, South Korea. Its construction is inspired by the upper garment of the traditional Korean clothing, hanbok, while the stitch patterns reference the many hills of the neighbourhood.
The cardigan has a T-shaped construction with European shoulders, a wrap front, a double-knit front band, and rolled edges at the cuffs and the bottom of the body.
Construction
The Samcheong-dong Cardigan is worked flat from the top down in textured stitch patterns. The back is worked first, with shoulder shaping created by increases on both the right side and wrong side. Stitches are then picked up for the shoulders, which are worked separately. The fronts are shaped with increases for the wrap closure and the front and back panels are joined under the arms. After the tuck, decreases are worked to form a slanted front edge, and short rows are worked for a slightly longer back than the front. The body is finished with a rolled edge cast-off.
Stitches are picked up around each armhole for the sleeves, which are worked separately in the round. Decreases are worked to form a curve at the lower part of the sleeves. Finally, the front band is worked in double knitting, and the ties are worked in i-cord.
The pattern includes charts, and does not provide a stitch-by-stitch description.
Difficulty level
Intermediate.
The pattern uses a range of techniques that assume prior experience with knitting patterns.
