Inspired by the summer meadows in the west of Ireland, Samhradh samhradh, “Summer summer” in Irish, is a light and luxurious summer shawl.

Knitted in garter stitch using Mohair and 4-ply/fingering weight yarn, this shawl is so soft and feels lovely agains the skin. It is a simple knit that focuses on texture and playing with different yarn weights, so it’s suitable for a complete beginner or a more experienced knitter.

Pick different yarn weights and play with colours to create your own summer meadow!

This pattern will also be available as a printed booklet and as a kit.

Size

Wingspan 230 cm / 90.5 in and width at the widest point is 95 cm / 37 in. Your shawl can be enlarged  by adding extra sections of either stripes or mohair.

Yarn

Two skeins of 4-ply/fingering weight yarn in contrasting colours and one skein of laceweight kid silk mohair. Speckled and variegated yarns would work really well for this project.

Allow at least 300 m / 328 yds for each yarn for the dimensions given.

The sample is knitted in hand-dyed Sionnach Yarns: 4-ply Fingering (75% merino - 25% nylon, 400 m / 437 yds per 100g skein) in Speckles and Turmeric; Kid Mohair (70% kid mohair - 30% mulberry silk, 420 m / 459 yds per 50g skein) in Red Onion.

Gauge

Measured over garter stitch after blocking, using fingering weight yarn is approximately 19 sts and 36 rows over 10 cm / 4 in.

Needles

4 mm / US 6 circular needles 120 cm / 47 in long.
