Note: This beret was designed for the assortment of small amounts (30-yard each) of different weights and types of yarns from the trick-or-treat mini skeins of the Central Kansas Yarn Shop Hop. As such, it’s a fantastic stash-buster.

Alternately, you also work it in a single color of your favorite bulky yarn.

This summer, we visited my parents in Chile, where, with the seasons reversed in the southern hemisphere, it was winter. The Chilean winter is closer to a Kansas fall, but the Chileans in Santiago were all bundled up like it was freezing, so I enjoyed the parade of stylish knits in the city, especially the profusion of bulky-knit slouchy berets worn by young women.

This pattern was inspired by my favorite, a garter stitch beret with a scattering of large cables and an oversized pompom.
