While I have met many knitters through physical knit nights and local events, the majority of the people I ‘talk’ to about knitting are people that I have met online (through Ravelry, various Facebook groups, Instagram and via my blog, www.vikkibirddesigns.com), where every knitter can find their own niche. Sara Elin was one of the early readers of my blog, referred there by my brother, who knew that Sara Elin liked knitting. Sara Elin is my most frequent blog commenter, and is now one of the people I count as a knitting friend, in spite of the fact I have never met her. These socks celebrate the people that I have come to know around the world entirely because of knitting.

The Sara Elin socks are knitted from the toe up and use a gusset and heel flap construction, shaped with short rows. The socks have a pattern on the instep and around the leg, while the sole is knitted in stocking stitch. The gusset length is affected by your row/round gauge, so a small amount of optional maths is included to achieve the perfect fit.

My Sara Elin socks are the third and final pattern in a collection of sock patterns, called the Knit Night Collection, named after a few of my favourite knitty people. All the socks in the collection come in three sizes (finished sock circumferences, 17.5 (20, 22.5) cm 7 (8, 9) in), with the different sizes being created by scaling the pattern, so larger socks have larger motifs. The patterns in the collection are written to be needle-neutral and can be knitted on any of DPNs, short circulars or long circulars using the magic loop technique.

Materials

  • 2.5 mm DPNs or a 2.5 mm circular needle at least 80 cm (31 in) in length
  • One ball of West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4 ply (4 ply; 400 m 436 yds per 100g ball; 75% wool, 25% nylon) or 400 m 436 yds of an equivalent sock yarn*
  • 4 stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle

*It is possible that if you are knitting for very large feet you may require more than 400 m 436 yds of yarn for a pair of socks. The sample socks shown are the largest size for a UK size 10 foot (foot length 26.75 cm/10.5 in) and used 320 m 349 yds of the suggested yarn. The socks shown are knitted in the colourway Sarsaparilla (545).
