Scalloped Heart Filet Square
Pattern Notes
Terminology
This pattern is written in US terminology.
If you are more familiar with UK terms, you must translate it before continuing.
dc x 10 = 1 x dc in the next 10 stitches
10dc = 10 dc in the same stitch
() = number of stitches in each row
sk 1 = skip 1 stitch
The numbers in blue show how many dc in each row between each ch1, sk1
For example, 10 - 10 = 10dc, ch1, sk1, 10dc
Starting a row
When crocheting rows of double crochet, there are several ways you can create the first stitch of each row. The most common way is to chain 3 and treat this chain as the first stitch. An alternative is to stack two single crochet stitches.
I always recommend using the stacked single crochet method as it:
Provides a tighter stitch at the end of the row
Leaves you with a classic “V” on top which is easier to go into instead of a chain 3
Is easier to work into the side of when creating the border row
This pattern shows charts and lists instructions for both methods, depending on your preference.
Text in red is for the stacked single crochet method and text in green is for the chain 3 method
Hook / Yarn Size
I used a size 4 yarn for this pattern with size 3.5mm hook.
Any yarn size and corresponding hook will work but filet looks better in thinner yarn instead of chunky.
