This 1884 pattern from The Young Ladies’ Journal, pp.51-52 uses 2 very different yarn weights. The original pattern called for 8 rows of thin yarn for every 2 rows of thick yarn. This caused pockets to form in my swatch, so I changed my pattern to 6 rows of thin yarn. Of the 16 pattern rows, 14 rows are knit across and 2 are tuck rows. There’s a multiple of 10 stitches +2 stitches. The extra 2 stitches make the tucks match on the sides of the piece.

Skills needed: cast on, purl, YO, p2tog and bind off in purl stitch.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.

15 yards of Lion Brand 24/7 yarn and 48 yards of Aunt Lydia’s Classic 10 thread will make 10 inches of a 32-stitch-wide strip at gauge.
