This fingerless mitten pattern is one I use to teach Latvian Braids to my knitting students. These unisex mittens are comfortable and quick to work up…there is no ribbing. It teaches to do both a left pointing and a right pointing braid. The double moss stitch body of the mitten adds interest and texture to the design and makes a perfect backdrop to show off the braids. I like to use my own handspun yarns as it is the perfect showcase for them. The mittens are worked flat and are great for beginners. There are video tutorials throughout demonstrating the different steps. I used one to two skeins of the Drops yarn as the main color depending on the size worked up. The accent color is only used in the braids and needed less than 40 yards….24 yards for the small size. These are worked flat then seamed up the side. Thumb gusset stitches are then picked up to finish off. There are basic instructions on how to do a custom size if you need something other than the 4 sizes included. Any worsted or DK weight yarn or combination of yarns can be used to make this pattern. A matching hat pattern to complete this set is coming in the Spring of 2026.
