Knit from the bottom up with a double layer base, this simple little project bag can be knit out of leftover yarns, handspun yarns of varying thicknesses, scraps, and any combination! Written for two very different gauges and yarn sizes makes this pattern perfect for any yarn, any needle size, and any scraps! Follow the recipe to make your perfect project bag and customize to fit your project size needs.

Yarn Suggestions – around 8-10 ounces of wool (230-280 grams)

  • Wool or wool blend yarn bulky weight
  • Multiple strands of fingering, sport, or dk weight wool or wool blend yarns held together to create bulky weight
  • Any DK weight yarn for fine gauge version of this pattern
  • Worsted cotton yarn if you are feeling adventurous
  • Scraps of any yarn you have on hand

Gauge
14 sts and 22 rows per 4 inches or 10 cm on US 10 (6.5 mm) needles
25 sts and 38 rows per 4 inches or 10 cm on US 4 (3.5 mm) needles

Measurements without blocking:
Bottom of finished bag in both gauges - 8 inches or 20 centimeters. That is 4 inches or 10 cm from center cast-on to turning edge. A purl round is worked between the base of bag and sides. Knit your bag as tall as you want it to be for your needs and your yarn. This bag is finished with an I-cord drawstring or ribbon woven through eyelets around the top for easy closure. This cord doubles as a carry handle.

Techniques used
Magic cast-on (I used Judy’s Magic Caston), knitting in the round, increases, decreases, picking up stitches, eyelets, standard bind-off, and I-cord.

2-3 inch pompoms add a touch of whimsey to this bag.
