Use your scraps for a random or purposeful design! This bandanna-style cowl is knit from side to side, folded in half, and seamed at the back of the neck to provide a squishy, two-layer cowl that has no “wrong” side that tends to flip over and show at your neck like so many others.

You leave long tails on every row, and all yarn ends are used to seam the piece and create fringe. Measurements are approximate and can vary with each individual project. Enjoy making a multitude of colorful stripes, use one color or dozens of leftovers!!! My final cowl weighed 125 grams plus excess for ends (140 g total estimate with excess fringe and tails cut off for final piece). Anything larger will need more yarn.

Use one color, two colors, 50 colors, or more! Pattern includes notes on how to customize this cowl to the size you want. I liked mine a little closer to my neck, but if you want it larger, I’ve included a schematic design. You can use heavier weights of yarn as well, although don’t forget the squishy garter fabric is doubled.

Each single garter ridge (two rows) uses about 3-3.5 meters/yards, so this is a great scrap-buster.
