A cozy and warm woolen sweater with a capacious hood on a drawstring, with some nordic colourwork :)

Knitted on circular needles in the round in a stockinette stitch from bottom to top. The sweater has a slight positive ease around a bust area, 10cm/4in of positive ease in sleeves around forearms, a high neckline, fitted wrist areas. The volume of a hood keeps your neck and shoulders warm, colourwork adds warmth for the belly, sleeve ornaments work as wrist warmers.

Fit and sizes:
Since lately I noticed that size charts differ even among fashion labels/retailers, I suggest the measurements for the finished and blocked garments (width as laid flat, length - shoulder to bottom hem):

XS - 38cm/14.9’’ width, 52.5cm/20.5’’ length
S (the sample on photos)- 43cm/17’’ width, 55cm/21.7’’ length
M - 48cm/18.9’’ width, 57.5cm/22.4’’ length
L - 53cm/20.9’’ width, 60cm/23.6’’ length
XL - 60cm/23.6’’ width, 62.5cm/24.4’’ length
XXL - 65cm/25.6’’ width, 65cm/25.6’’ length

Concerning length, one may choose the stated length or add/shorten according to preferences. To find your size, measure yourself at a bust line and add some positive ease. If you doubt about the size or are between sizes, choose the larger one for a more relaxed, cozier fit :)
Pattern step: 6 stitches.
All the measurements inside the pattern are given both in cm and inches (possibly presicely converted).

The description contains:

  • the number of stitches to cast (to meet the certain whole number of colourwork pattern repeats)
  • step-by-step knitting stages (body, a neckline, armhole height, sleeves, a hood) with necessary calculations and photos of the process
  • colourwork charts
  • some recommendations for blocking

Please note: there will be some simple calculations for an armhole and a sleeve, since the forearm area has 10cm/4in positive ease according to your personal forearm measurement, and a wrist area is fitted.

Yarn:

  • fingering weight yarn that turns fluffy after washing or any combinations/variants to meet the gauge 21st in 10cm/4’’ knitted in 3.5mm/US4 needles,
  • volume total 300-360-420-480-540-600g, the proportion of main colour to the white/contrast colour is approx.17:1 ( for ex., for S size there were 340g of main and 20g of white colour, max. approx.35g), but if you wish to make the colourwork area wider, consider adding to this
  • the final yardage depends on the size of the garment, the length that you choose, and the volume of the hood - given are approximate from XS to XXL yardage
  • please knit a swatch to try your yarn, the stated (Aade lõng) turns fluffier when washed, the gauge is given for a washed and blocked garment

Tools:

  • circular needles 3.5mm/US4, the length of the cord according to your size and preferences
  • a knitting hook 3mm (or any close size, to pick stitches)
  • a measuring tape, a big/tapestry needle, a safety pin, scissors, knitting markers Optional:
  • circular needles 2.5-3mm for a rib
  • DPNs 3.5mm for sleeves

Techniques:

  • knit and purl, stockinette stitch
  • stranded colourwork (max. strand 3st)
  • picking/raising stitches with a knitting hook
  • increasing: I recommend any technique that creates stitches in existing stitches, not from the strand between needles, to avoid holes
  • decreasing: knit 2 sts together; slip 1 st knitwise, knit 1, pass the slipped stitch over stitch worked
  • sewing
  • any type of bind off
