The pattern is worked generally in the round in a spiral for ease, with the exception of rows with a colour change. These include a slip stitch and ch1 to start, with the following row beginning in the chain stitch. This makes the colour change less abrupt.

It uses a few intermediate stitches such as a half-double crochet spike stitch and modified picot stitch which are explained in the pattern.
