Seed Pod Socks
If you think about it, a seed pod is a kind of treasure chest. A plant puts all its energy into producing these pouches, where the next generation waits to meet the world. Depending on the species, it may hide its precious seeds in a rigid shell to protect them from thieves. Or display them in colourful, decorative fruits, in the hopes that some animal with legs or wings will carry them off to a new frontier. With their often strange shapes, infinitely varied and sometimes literally bursting with life, seed pods are a beautiful reminder of fresh starts and all the excitement of new beginnings.
The Seed Pod Socks begin with a twisted rib cuff, which grows into an interesting textured band at the top of the leg. It’s fun to watch the shapes of seed pods emerge from your needles, built up from tiny cables and twisted stitches against a garter background. The rest of the leg and foot relaxes into easy round-and-round stockinette stitch, which makes these socks a lovely knit when you want something exciting to start you off, and something simple and sociable to carry you to a speedy finished project. The pattern is knit from the top down, includes three sizes, and is finished with a slip stitch rib heel and wedge toe, but as always, is easily customised for sock-knitters in search of a personalised fit.
