Roan Mountain is a picturesque mountain in the Appalachian foothills of Tennessee known for its rhododendron gardens and unique mountain top balds. My roots are here. I wanted to create a lovely simple shawl to reflect the timeless beauty of the mountain.

Knit in DK weight cotton linen yarn, the shawl is perfect for a cool summer evening in the mountains. It would be a great winter shawl if knitted in wool or alpaca. Once the pattern is established, it’s an easy knit. Simple enough even for knitting in the car.

The gauge swatch is 4”x4” stockinette knitted inside a seed stitch border. Gauge isn’t necessary, but will affect how much yarn is needed. I had 30 yards left over from the 500 yds I bought.

Test knitters used a variety of dk yarns in wool and cotton. Most used solid yarns, but one used a short striping yarn that turned out fabulous.
