A big cosy lightweight Selbu colourwork coat made in no time with DK-weight yarn on fairly big needles. It is equally suitable for worsted weight yarn. The coat is worked top-down in the round, with steeks for each armhole and the front. This is a great first all-over-colourwork garment, as it’s as quick as it’s impressive looking.

I hope you will enjoy this pattern, and if you need any help, please do not hesitate to contact me in my Ravelry group ‘Skeindeer Knits’. It’s the best place for swift support.

Yarn
Hillesvåg Sol (100% Norwegian lambswool, 317 / 190 yds, 100g).

Alternatives: Navia Trio, Hillesvåg Tinde, Rauwerk Merino DK. Or held double: Holst Supersoft, JC Rennie Lambswool 4ply, Rauma Lamullgarn, etc.

You will get the best result with worsted-DK non-superwash woollen spun sheep wool yarn.

Yarn amount
Main colour (white): (455, 540, 635, 725, 770, 880) m / (500, 590, 695, 795, 840, 960) yds
Contrast colour (black): (725, 830, 945, 1055, 1110, 1240) m / (795, 910, 1035, 1155, 1215, 1355) yds

Needles
Gauge-size needles for yoke, body and sleeves, 1.5 mm below-gauge circular needles for ribbed bands, hem and cuffs.

The sample was made using 5.5 mm (US 9) and 4 mm (US 6) though most will probably need smaller needle sizes than me.

Gauge
18 sts x 24 rnds = 10 cm / 4” in stranded colourwork.

Sizes
(85, 105, 125, 145, 165, 185) cm / (33, 41, 49, 57, 65, 73)“ garment bust

To be worn with 20-40 cm / 8-16” of positive ease. This means I recommend choosing a size that measures 20-40 cm / 8-16” more than the recipient’s bust measurements.
The sample is knit in size 4.

Notions
8 removable stitch markers
A crochet hook about the same size as your below gauge-size needles.

Construction
This garment is worked top-down, seamlessly in the round, with steeks for each sleeve and for the cardigan opening. Sleeves are picked up around the armholes and worked top-down in the round as well.

Finally, stitches are picked up for the ribbed collar and front bands. This band is worked flat from hem to hem, around th neck.

The overall bust circumference of this garment assumes the overlapping bands adds 5 cm / 2”.
