Selbu Style Fingerless Gloves
Published on ravelry 21st of Dec 2023
This is a charted colorwork pattern of a fingerless glove modeled after Selbu style mittens, including specific motifs found in Selbu Mittens by Anne Bardsgard. There is no written version of the chart, although there are instructions alongside the chart explaining the cast on and certain techniques.
They have a short cuff, relatively narrow thumb gussets, stitches casted on over the opening to make up the inner half of the thumb itself, and a separate cuff, back of hand, and palm pattern. The all-over pattern on the palm is also continued on the inside of the thumb. The body of the knitting involves several rows of twisted 1x1 ribbing before transitioning into colorwork which continues nearly entirely up the body of the work.
The pattern requires two skeins of the suggested yarn - these gloves weighed about 50 grams when I made them though, so you won’t use the entire skein. I do not have measurements of the finished objects as they have already stretched to fit me. Any fingering weight yarn can be used - some people find the suggested yarn scratchy. The colors used in my sample are “linen” and “gentry grey” (edit: original notes said “black”)
The gloves have one size, but can be resized fairly easily by adding rows either before or after the beginning the thumb gusset (for a longer cuff and palm respectively) and extra stitches for width, or, as traditional, using different yarn and needles to achieve a different gauge. That being said, these fit an average woman’s or a slightly smaller-than-average man’s hand.
The “R” is just the initial I used - you can insert any letter you want. There is no chart provided for any other letter as I used one from the book listed here.
Gauge swatch should be done in 1x1 colorwork and washed just the same as you plan to wash the finished work. This pattern is not tech edited, but it’s the pattern I made when I developed these gloves and barring time constraints on my part I’m happy to answer questions when I can. Happy holidays!
